Frequently asked questions about the Beekman Library How do I get a library card? Any Beekman resident may obtain a card by bringing proof of residence to the library and registering for a borrower's card. If you are a new resident and do not have an updated drivers license bring a postmarked piece of mail with your new address and your picture ID. Where can the card be used? In any one of the 70 libraries in the Mid-Hudson Library System, which are, located in Columbia, Dutchess, Putnam, Orange and Greene counties. You may also return items to any library in the system regardless of where you checked them out. How long can I keep my items? Most items can be checked out for three weeks with one renewal available. DVD’s and magazines may be checked out for one week with one renewal available. How do I request items online? Click on the catalog link and search for an item. When you find the item you want click on the green request a title button on the top left of the page. You will be prompted to enter your library barcode (found on the back of your card) and your PIN. If you have never you a pin you can create it the first time you request an item, if you forget your Pin call the library and we will reset it for you. How do I pay my fines online? Click on the online catalog link. Click on log into my record. Enter your library card number and PIN, and click unpaid fines. Click pay online and choose your payment type. You will not be able to access your fines if they are under $5.00. How does the library obtain funding? Beekman Library receives about 85% of its funding from the residents of the town of Beekman. It also receives funds from Dutchess County and New York State. The library also does fundraising. Who are the people who comprise the Board and what do they do? The Board is a group of citizens from all backgrounds who have a deep and abiding love for the library and who place its interests above all others. Their function is to govern the policies of the library, watch over its finances and see to it that Beekman Library fulfills its Mission Statement. What are these fund raising events? The Board sends out an annual appeal letter for donations. The Friends hold periodic book sales and other events at which books and crafts are sold. In addition, they hold a holiday sale and silent auction each December. Where does the library get the books for the book sales? Books are donated by the public. Those that are deemed useful for the collection will be cataloged. The rest are put aside until the next sale. Donors must call before dropping off books to be sure we have room to store them. We do not accept condensed books, text books, encyclopedias before 1993 and materials which have water or mildew damage. Are donations to the library tax exempt? Beekman Library is a non-profit 501c (3) organization. All donations are tax exempt and gratefully accepted. Book donations are accepted and will be evaluated for the collection. If they are not needed in the collection they are sold at our book sales. |
